Knitting Trend: Kate Middleton Cardigan

By Kristen Leave a Comment

It’s no surprise that the hottest design this season seems to be knitting designs that replicate the knit shrug that Kate Middleton wore at her wedding reception.  The white, angora cardigan was highlighted in the [intlink id=”151″ type=”post”]Fall Knitting Magazines Preview[/intlink] that I did last week.  So imagine my surprise when Knitter’s Magazine hit my mailbox and I noticed a pink cardigan that is a twist on the Kate Middleton cardigan.

The angora cardigan that Vogue Knitting Magazine offers on its website is more true to the Kate Middleton sweater.  Knit in a fluffy, white angora yarn, this sweater has 3/4 sleeves and a cropped top.  This pattern is really more of a shrug and is perfect for wearing over a dress or blouse.

On the other hand, the pink cardigan highlighted in the new Knitter’s Magazine has a longer bodice and the sleeves look a little longer as well.  Some may call this pink sweater a cardigan, while others would call the white cardigan a shrug.  Whatever you call them, these quick and easy sweaters are great knits for the fall season.

These sweaters would make great gifts this holiday season.  Pick-up some yarn on sale this Labor Day weekend and you can have a beautiful, yet affordable gift to knit for someone special in your life.

Happy Knitting!

Vogue Knitting Magazine Review: Early Fall 2011

By Kristen Leave a Comment

Vogue Knitting Magazine

It was love at first sight for me with the early fall issue of vogue knitting magazine.  With a luxurious red, cabled sweater on the front cover, I knew I would enjoy the fall edition.

Vogue Knitting Magazine-Early Fall 2011

Vogue Knitting Magazine-Early Fall 2011

What I enjoy about Vogue Knitting is that the magazine showcases beautiful and wearable designs.  Yes, sometimes they do go a little too “Project Runway” on me and have designs that are too adventurous.  These are designs that may look good on the model, but I know that it is something that I would never wear.  So I am most appreciative when Vogue Knitting focuses on projects that are geared towards the average woman.  I want to see designs that will be as much fun to knit as they are to wear.

The early fall edition of vogue knitting magazine showcases a lot of capelets and shawls.  In fact, the photo on the cover page that I admired is actually a capelet.  Shawls and capelets are great projects for the fall, when cooler days and nights make these great layering pieces to add to your wardrobe.

In addition to capelets, the fall issue includes knitting patterns for over-sized sweaters that can be worn with leggings or pants.  With the longer tunic length, these patterns offer a lot of versatility in how you wear these knitted designs.

My favorite pattern in the magazine is a chiseled jacket that can be worn two ways.  The first way gives you a long jacket that drapes down past the buttocks.  Turn the sweater upside down and you have the second way to wear this jacket.  Wearing it this way gives you a large collar that becomes more narrow as it gets closer to the waist.

In addition to a lot of beautiful designs, the fall issue also includes an article highlighting Elizabeth Zimmermann (“EZ”) and her design philosophy of never having to purl and always doing a garter stitch.  Twelve years after her death, her family has just published a new book, “Knit One Knit All”.  This book discusses EZs technique of always knitting and never doing any purl stitches in a pattern.  The book includes 40 projects that support her garter stitch design philosophy.

The fall issue of vogue knitting magazine is a beautiful edition and is worthy of picking up when you visit your LYS or book store.
